Why do we sweat from our armpits (axillae)?

Our under-arm area, or Armpits, are medically called our Axillae (one is an axilla, two or more are axillae).

Humans sweat:

  • To lose heat
  • In times of stress
  • With certain medical conditions

It is an interesting fact that humans are the smallest animal to sweat. Animals smaller than us lose heat by other techniques - ie: dogs pant over a wet tongue to lose heat.

Humans and larger animals have sweat glands to secrete sweat and so to lose heat.

Sweating is not evenly distributed over the body. Different people sweat more from some areas than others.

The underarms - or axillae - are enclosed areas which heats up and where the air cannot circulate much - so in everybody there is a higher chance of sweating from this area.

Some people sweat more here than others - this is really just the way their nervous system is wired up! Research has shown that if you sweat about 1 ml (or 1 cc) per hour from the armpit, the sweat evaporates and you don't think that you have a sweating problem.

People who know they have a sweating problem sweat about 3.5 mls per hour from each Armpit. the air cannot evaporate this much water and so it runs out of the skin, staining the clothes and causing embarrassment.

What can I do to stop sweating from my Armpits?

Most people can control their Armpit sweating (or axillary hyperhidrosis) by anti-perspirant sprays or roll on preparations. If these are effective, you won't need the rest of this website.

However, if these preparations are not effective, or if they irritate your skin, then this website will have answers for you.

Medical Treatments for Armpit sweating or Axillary Hyperhidrosis

The most important thing, before talking about treatment, is to make sure that you don't have a simple problem.

Many people think they have axillary hyperhidrosis but actually:

  • Dress inappropriately for the conditions
  • Drink too much fluid
  • Have a medical condition

Therefore before you decide on a treatment, it is essential that you see an expert who will check you out and see if there is a problem that can be treated without going to the medical treatments in this website.

Sometimes a consultation and tests to find such a problem can be the most effective - and cost effective - way of treating this problem!!!
